Learning Outcomes
Students who successfully complete the HIS PhD program will:
- Demonstrate and deconstruct systematic knowledge of Health Information Science as a diverse and interdisciplinary field of study; Critically relate Health Information Science to cognate disciplines
- Assess and creatively utilize inquiry to draw valid conclusions based on sound analysis of data related to research problems within Health Information Science
- Critically appraise and evaluate theoretical approaches and current issues associated with the study and application of knowledge translation and mobilization in diverse health contexts
- Generate and produce new knowledge in Health Information Sciences and related fields based on evaluation of health, information, and technology using an equity and culturally-sensitive lens
- Recognize and appreciate the broader historical, political, economic, cultural, social, and technological contexts of HIS
- Apply evidence-based knowledge to understand the needs of diverse health user groups and effectively mobilize HIS knowledge
- Interpret and examine existing and emerging technologies in relation to the dissemination and application of health information
- Conceptualize, design, and produce original research that contributes new scholarly knowledge within their area of Health Information Science expertise while meeting disciplinary expectations of rigour and relevance
- Reflexively critique the partial nature of Health Information Science knowledge and the power asymmetries of dominant Health Information Science methodologies from the perspectives of impacted communities
- Advance their own scholarly development and learning and, where appropriate, be able to support, mentor and learn from the scholarly development and learning of others, including faculty, peers and students
- To make graduates of the PhD programme well equipped for the world of work. Students will be able to communicate complex and/or ambiguous ideas, issues, and conclusions clearly and effectively to specialist and non-specialist audiences. Work collaboratively with all stakeholders to create, develop and exchange research knowledge to influence and benefit society
