Are you considering a Guided Research Project, a Major Research Project or starting your thesis research next term? If your research involves collecting data from or about people, attendance at this human research ethics workshop is required before submitting any Guided Research, Major Research or thesis research proposal for the Winter 2021 term. You can also attend if you're considering a research project in a subsequent term, though the same workshop will be offered in the Winter 2021 and Spring 2021 terms. If you have already received ethics approval for your research/data collection, attendance is not required. To register, please email Shelley Long at slong@uwo.ca.

"Amplifying women's concerns in a time of crisis: A study of women's rights organizations on Twitter during the COVID-19 pandemic"

Abstract: The COVID-19 pandemic is exposing and exacerbating gender inequalities. Women are more likely to become unemployed due to COVID-related job cuts, face increased domestic violence, and struggle accessing prenatal care and abortions. However, policymakers have not sufficiently considered gender and associated inequalities when designing pandemic relief measures. This research investigates how women’s rights organizations have used Twitter to raise awareness of gender inequality during the COVID-19 pandemic and to engage with their followers over women’s concerns and possible solutions (continue reading).

Presented by Grant Campbell (faculty), Albi Nani (MIT'20) and Kaitlyn Adam (MIT student) as part of the FIMS Seminar Series.

Abstract: This presentation combines media theory, economic theory and information science in an initial effort to clarify the predicament of the performing arts in Canada in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, with a dual focus on arts organizations such as theatre festivals and on individual performers, such as musicians, actors and dancers. We explore two potential models of survival: a traditional model of appealing to government support on the grounds of the social and economic value of the performing arts, and an alternative model based on the economics of online gaming communities (continue reading).

Associate Professor Jacquie Burkell and Media Studies PhD candidate Chandell Gosse published an article titled, "Politics and porn: how news media characterises the problems presented by deepfakes," in Critical Studies in Media Communication on October 24, 2020.

Many members of the FIMS community came together over the past year as authors, peer-reviewers, volunteers, and advisors to bring the work together. Victoria McIntosh, MLIS'09, was featured in a Q&A titled, "In Business with Victoria McIntosh and Information in Bloom Management Services (IIBMS)," published in Librarianship.ca on October 20.

Leigh-Ann Morris, MLIS'10, was featured in a Q&A titled, "In Business with Leigh-Ann Morris and Summit Martial Arts," published in Librarianship.ca on October 21.

Associate Professor Matt Stahl and research collaborator Olufunmilayo Arewa were interviewed for an article titled, "Deep Asymmetries Of Power: How The Recording Industry Spent Decades Denying Fair Payment to Black Artists," published on grammy.com on October 19.



News from the FIMS Graduate Library


Open: Monday to Friday 11am - 3pm (closed weekends and holidays)

Policies for socially-distanced use of the library:

  • follow the signs on doors and floors for traffic flow
  • masks are mandatory in the library
  • show your FIMS library card upon entry (you will be provided with a card on your first visit)
  • you must book a study or computer space before or upon arrival (we can help you with that at the service desk)
  • food and drinks are not permitted
  • wipe down your space before and after use
For health and safety reasons, access to the print collections are closed throughout campus. We can retrieve items from our collection for you to use in the library. After use, these items will be quarantined for 72 hours before they are available for others to use.

Journal Release and more: Emerging Library & Information Perspectives (ELIP)
We are pleased to announce the publication of the third volume of Emerging Library & Information Perspectives (ELIP)! We are very proud and appreciative of the many members of the FIMS community who came together over the past year as authors, peer-reviewers, volunteers, and advisors to bring this important work together. This volume includes 16 different pieces by 14 different authors, and includes research, reflections, and reviews pertaining to many diverse areas and experiences within LIS. The work included is critical, innovative, and original—it is very much what the field needs in our current moment. We hope you enjoy ELIP 2020: The Stay Home Edition!

Announcing ELIP’s new Managing Editor for the 2020-21 Edition
The FIMS Graduate Library is pleased to announce that Aarushi Mohan is our new Managing Editor for Emerging Library and Information Perspectives (ELIP), the academic journal for MLIS students. ELIP offers you the opportunity to build a robust intellectual community.

Here is a little about Aarushi: she graduated from Haverford College this May, where she majored in philosophy. She was on the editorial team of Body Text, the student-run academic journal at Haverford, so she looks forward to bringing that experience to ELIP.

Please feel free to reach out during her office hours (12-2 pm starting Fridays on November 13) or by appointment if she can answer any questions about the journal, or the publishing process.

Call for Submissions
We are now accepting submissions for the 2020-21 issue of ELIP!

We accept five main types of submissions: articles (3000-6000 words), “For the Field” summaries, “In the Field” reflections, interviews, and reviews. You can browse previous ELIP editions for examples of the works we publish; past editions have included an article about epistemic justice in the archives, an interview about mentorship in libraries, and a review of Moxie by Jennifer Mathieu.

Submissions should be made by creating an Open Journal Systems (OJS) account. For more information, you can visit ELIP’s website or contact us at elip@uwo.ca.

Our deadline for submissions is December 15, 2020.
