Nominations open for the Spirit of Librarianship and Fantastic FIMS awards
Nominations for the Spirit of Librarianship and Fantastic FIMS awards are now open! You will have until Sunday March 15 at midnight to submit nominations for these awards. Please submit your nominations via  jtoffle2@uwo.ca. The award winners will be announced before the end of the term. Please note: The Spirit of Librarianship award cannot be awarded to the same person more than once. However, the Fantastic FIMS award can be awarded to the same individual more than once, but not more than one time in a 5-year period. Your nomination should include an explanation as to why you are nominating that individual. You can submit multiple nominations. Nominations and voting will only take a few minutes of your time, so start thinking about who you think are deserving of these awards!

Student Councils/Associations raise money for My Sister's Place
The MMJCSC, FIMSSC, and GHISSA collaborated in late February on a SparkJoy Clothing sale that raised $300 for My Sister's Place. The sale was held on the first floor of the FNB atrium. See tweet.

President's Anti-Racism Working Group wants your opinion
The President’s Anti-Racism Working Group (ARWG) invites you to share your opinion on how Western can counter racism on our campus. If you’ve had any experiences with racism on campus that you think Western’s administration should know about, and if you have any ideas to help make Western a safer, more respectful and inclusive place to learn and work—we want to hear from you. Your views matter and we hope you will choose to share them by visiting the ARWG website at https://president.uwo.ca/anti-racism/survey.html where you will find a link to participate in an anonymous online survey. The survey will be open until Thursday, March 19.

Deadline for CARL Graduate Student Research Grant applications on March 31
CARL invites applications from students currently enrolled in an accredited Canadian Library and Information Studies program. When merited, up to $1,000 is awarded annually to one or more applicants, to help achieve the following objectives: (1) To support current LIS students actively conducting research pertaining to research libraries with the intent to publish the results. (2) To promote research in the field of academic librarianship by and/or about Canadians. The CARL Research in Librarianship Grant is intended to support projects involving structured, evidence-based research, which propose answers to real-world issues. Deadline: proposals should be submitted via email by March 31, 2020. More information.



Awards & Accomplishments


Melissa Adler, Assistant Professor, and Amanda Grzyb, Associate Professor, successfully obtained a FIMS Undergraduate Research Experience Fellowship Program grant for 2020-2021 titled, "Max Eisen Papers."

Lyndsay Foisey, PhD in HIS candidate, is the Co-PI for a successful 2-year CIHR Operating Grant under the titled, "What is the public health risk communication response to COVID-19 in the context of social media?" (PI: Anita Kothari).

Lyndsay was also named a top-ranked submission in the Canadian Bioethics Society Student Writing Contest for her essay titled, "At the intersection of social media, health information and data privacy: A critical commentary on the use of emerging health technologies in Canadian healthcare."

Professor Pam McKenzie and FIMS Instructor Erin Isings successfully obtained a FIMS Undergraduate Research Experience Fellowship Program grant for 2020-2021 titled, "Representations of the Public Library in Canadian Mass Media."

Lyndsay Foisey, PhD in HIS candidate, was featured in two news articles in relation to her recently obtained CIHR Operating Grant (see Awards & Accomplishments for more info). The first article was titled, "Western teams recruited in effort to combat COVID-19," published in Western News on March 6. The second article was titled, "Western University receives more than $400,000 for coronavirus research," published on CBC News online on March 6.

Jade Prevost-Manuel, MMJC student, was featured in a Western News article titled, "Prévost-Manuel named CBC Donaldson Scholar," published on March 2, 2020.

Sam Trosow, Associate Professor, is featured in a CTVNews online article titled, "'Everyone in London should be concerned': Legal expert weighs in on facial recognition technology," published on March 9, 2020.


Additional Activities of Note


Catherine Graves, a recent MLIS graduate, has been interning at the UN in Turin, Italy for the last several weeks (she has now returned safely to Canada). Prior to global events impacting her plans, Catherine sent a short write-up and some photos of her experience, to encourage others to apply for similar opportunities.
