Lindsay Adoranti - Making the most of your learning opportunities
By Qianyu Rowena Zheng
Lindsay's hometown: Hamilton, Ontario
From Student Library Assistant to MLIS student–Lindsay Adoranti is curious to see where this path will lead her.
---
It was trying a new job on for size that convinced student Lindsay Adoranti to go from earning her undergraduate degree in Labour Studies and Sociology to pursuing a master's degree in library and information science.
“When I was an undergrad, I worked as a Student Library Assistant at the Brock University Library, and that's when I started to explore applying to library school,” said Lindsay.
In May 2023, three weeks after completing her bachelor's degree at Brock, Lindsay began the MLIS program at Western University in London, Ontario.
One thing that struck her was how the degree gives students choices.
Fun Fact
Lindsay has a collection of over 30 snow globes from around the world, gathered from her travels and as gifts from others.
“A great asset to Western’s MLIS program is that there are so many different options that students can choose after they graduate.” Lindsay said, “You can work in libraries that specialize in different areas: public, academic, government, corporate libraries, research or other specializations. I am looking forward to seeing the various paths the degree can take me.”
Along with her studies, Lindsay worked as a Student Library Assistant at the FIMS Graduate Library in Fall 2023, and it has been her favorite experience in the program. During her time in the role, she was involved in a Canada-wide Indigenous book-wrapping project. The project honoured missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls by creating a visual representation of all the names of those affected.
The opportunity to work on different projects and connect with students at FIMS is very rewarding for her, as is the flexibility of the MLIS program. “There are many ways to get involved in the program, whether that be joining the MLISSC, applying to the co-op program, or working on campus at Western Libraries. There are a variety of courses for students to customize their experience and try something new.”
For example, Lindsay took information retrieval, which gave her an understanding of how to efficiently locate and access relevant data, significantly enhancing her research and information management skills.
In January 2024, Lindsay took advantage of the program’s optional co-op program and started an 8-month placement working at Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC).
“My co-op experience has been very rewarding,” she said, “The work environment at ECCC is very welcoming and the Library Services team is extremely supportive of my ideas and interests. I have been able to work on a variety of reference questions, literature reviews, learn how to make accessible Library Guides, and expand my knowledge in library technologies. I feel very valued there.”
Lindsay loves the challenge of responding to complex research questions and taking on new tasks.
Lindsay sees value in all the learning opportunities she’s been able to participate in while enrolled in the program. She takes advantage of the different experiences open to her so that she can maximize the value of the MLIS degree.
Lindsay is anticipating her December 2024 graduation and is determined to make a meaningful impact in the field of librarianship, no matter the avenue.
