Sam Trosow receives 2020-2021 CAUT Dedicated Service Award
April 2021
Professor Sam Trosow has been named a recipient of the 2020-2021 CAUT Dedicated Service Award for his work with UWOFA over the course of his career. Jointly appointed to the Faculty of Information & Media Studies and the Faculty of Law, Trosow has been an active member of UWOFA since 2002. He served for four years on the Board of Directors and for an additional year on the Executive as Secretary. He also served for years as UWOFA’s Privacy Officer, on the Grievance Committee, on the Policy and Governance Committee, as part of the 2018 Faculty Strike Action committee, and for a time on the Librarians and Archivists Negotiating Committee. Trosow served on the Joint Committee on the Implications of Technology and continues to advise on copyright and fair-use dealing, and freedom of expression. Through his work for UWOFA, Western’s Senate and the Board of Governors he has been a strong voice for transparent, inclusive and collegial self-governance.
The CAUT Dedicated Service Award was established by the Canadian Association of University Teachers to recognize exceptional service provided by individuals at the local or provincial level. Professor Trosow is the fourth FIMS faculty member to receive the award since it was created in 2003. Previous winners include James Compton, Marni Harrington and Alison Hearn. Candidates are nominated by their associations.
Along with his longstanding service to UWOFA, Professor Trosow teaches in the Master of Media in Journalism & Communication program and the Master of Library & Information Science program (FIMS), as well as courses in copyright law, media law and music and copyright (Faculty of Law). Despite his busy schedule, Trosow has found his service in postsecondary governance to be very worthwhile.
"The work I have done with UWOFA and CAUT over the years has been very satisfying. I would like to encourage all of my FIMS colleagues to volunteer for union service activity. "
