Facilitated Panel Discussion: Accountability and Transparency in News Media in an Era of “Alternative Facts”
Saturday, October 21, 2017
10:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
FIMS & Nursing Building Rm. 2220, Western University
In honour of Homecoming 2017 and the 20th anniversary of the Faculty of Information & Media Studies, FIMS is pleased to host a panel discussion focusing on transparency and accountability in news media in an era of "alternative facts."
As the common understanding of the term "fake news" continues to evolve, and the credibility of traditionally mainstream media comes under greater scrutiny from a variety of stakeholders, everyday citizens are finding it increasingly difficult to know where to turn for reliable information.
Join our panel of journalists and scholars as they discuss the challenges facing an industry that remains a cornerstone of democratic society.
Panelists include:
- Sylvia Stead, Public Editor, Globe and Mail
- Mary Baxter, TVO Hub Reporter
- Rebecca Zandbergen, Morning Show host, CBC London
- Andrew Lundy, VP Digital, Canadian Press
- Victoria Rubin, FIMS Researcher and Professor
Moderated by Paul Benedetti: reporter, columnist with the Hamilton Spectator, and FIMS journalism instructor.
Visitors will also have the opportunity to explore the brand new FIMS & Nursing Building, including the FIMS Graduate Library and FIMS broadcast studios, through informal tours.
Alumni may sign up through Western Alumni, but registration is not necessary to attend and everyone is welcome at this public event.
