Abstract: This talk is about what I’ve learned teaching undergraduates about racism. My goal is to synthesize a decade of experience and communicate a teaching philosophy openly socialist in nature. One meant to develop and equip new comrades with the knowledge needed to defeat racism. Hence, it’s about the relationship between teaching and politics, theory and practice, race and class, and starts from the premise that teaching is an inherently political act.

Campus community invited to townhalls re: Western's Strategic Mandate Agreement
All members of Western’s campus community are invited to attend one of two town hall meetings for a high-level update on the renewal of the University’s Strategic Mandate Agreement with the Ontario government (aka, SMA3). Ruban Chelladurai and Andrew Hrymak will be hosting these information sessions. A formal presentation will be followed by a question-and-answer period. Meeting Dates: January 22, 2020, 3:30-4:30PM, McKellar Room (UCC 290), and January 23, 2020, 10:30-11:30AM, McKellar Room (UCC 290).

Emma Donoghue's Room to premiere at the Grand Theatre
The Grand Theatre is thrilled to announce the North American premiere of Room, based on Emma Donoghue’s bestselling novel Room, in a first-time collaboration with Mirvish Productions and the UK's Covent Garden Productions. Room has now been adapted as a new play with songs by Scottish songwriters Kathryn Joseph and Cora Bissett. Previously adapted by Donoghue for the screen, the film won Academy Awards®, Golden Globes, and BAFTAs. March 10-28, 2020.

FIMS Holiday Food Drive Recap
Thank you to everyone who contributed to the FIMS Holiday Food Drive this year. Your donations are truly and deeply appreciated. FIMS collected 224 food items for the London Food Bank this holiday season. Also thanks to food drive organizer Sam Vander Kooy, who advertised, collected, and carted the donations around FNB.

In Memoriam: Mary Elliott (MLIS alumna)
MLIS alumna Mary Elliott passed away peacefully on December 8, 2019, in her 96th year. Her obituary can be found online.



Awards & Accomplishments

Following the promotion and tenure process, Nick Dyer-Witheford has been promoted to Professor.

Associate Professor Alison Hearn and her co-applicants - Profs Alissa Centivany, Nick Dyer-Witheford, and Tom Streeter - have been awarded a SSHRC Connection Grant for “Big Data at the Margins: A series of panels and workshops”. Drawing its inspiration from its immediate context of London, Ontario, this series of panels and workshops will examine the various ways digital media, big data and artificial intelligence effect the daily lives of those who are economically, socially or geographically marginalized. Panels will be open to the public, and smaller workshops will be open to graduate students and local community activists and policymakers from Southwestern Ontario.

The following group of LIS alumni made the 2019 Librarianship.ca Honour Roll, which recognizes their contributions to the profession and to Canadian society: Selinda Berg, Catherine Coles, Skye Corey, Alissa Droog, Danielle Bettridge, Alyssa Martin, Ashleigh Yates-MacKay, Tanis Fink, Louise Hamel, Katherine Hill, Jonathon Hodge, Sabina Iseli-Otto, Beth Maddigan and Gillian Shaw.



Publications & Presentations

Associate Professor Victoria Rubin and LIS docteral student Nicole Delellis contributed a chapter titled, "'Fake News' in the Context of Information Literacy: A Canadian Case Study," in the recently published book, Navigating Fake News, Alternative Facts, and Misinformation in a Post-Truth world.

Nicole Doro, MLIS alumna, published the article, "I wasn't sure how lightning worked, then it struck me: reflections from the OCULA Student Council Representative" on the Open-Shelf.ca website on December 11, 2019.

An amusing tweet from Erica Eades, MLIS alumna, was featured on the CBC News website under the headline, "Just a couple of turkeys waiting for a bus," on December 9, 2019.

Gayle Garlocks, MLIS alumnus, was featured in an article titled, "Gayle Garlock's love of reading led to his own tome about Canada's book trade," published on the Globe and Mail website on December 10, 2019.

An interview with Paige Martin, MMJC alumna, was featured in an article titled, "Why hockey culture needs more women holding top jobs in junior hockey: Paige Martin," on the CBC News website on January 10, 2020.



Additional Activities of Note

Juan Bello, FIMS instructor, was the Visual (Footage) Researcher on Nisman: The Prosecutor, the President, and the Spy, a documentary series that is now available on NETFLIX (Premiered on January 1st, 2020). The project was produced by ZDFinfo (Germany), JW Productions (Spain), and Gebrueder Beetz Filmproduktion (Germany) for Netflix, with the support of Creative Europe MEDIA (a program of the European Union).

Associate Professor Victoria Rubin participated in this year's 3 Minute Thesis kickoff on January 7, 2020, by presenting her research in just three minutes and with a single slide. Doctoral students from all faculties are encouraged to give the 3MT a try, as it aims to build research communication skills. Registration for the 3MT is now open.
