Two new Asper Fellows are set to join FIMS in 2024

The Faculty of Information and Media Studies (FIMS) is pleased to announce the appointment of two new FIMS Asper Fellows set to join the FIMS community during the Winter 2024 and Fall 2024 academic terms.

Chase JoyntChase Joynt is an Assistant Professor of Gender Studies at the University of Victoria and has a distinguished career in filmmaking, writing, acting, and teaching. Joynt’s award-winning films focus on gender issues and have been recognized globally. He will draw on his breadth of knowledge and experience in filmmaking to teach a graduate level class beginning in January.

Sheima Benembarek

FIMS is also pleased to announce Fall 2024 Asper Fellow Sheima Benembarek. Benembarek is currently a writer and an editor at Strategy magazine based out of Toronto. Benembarek’s work focuses on social justice, immigrant narratives, and intersectional feminism. In 2020, she was named one of the five RBC Taylor Prize Emerging Writers. Benembarek will teach a graduate level course beginning in September 2024.

The Asper Fellowship in Media (formerly the CanWest Global Fellowship) was established in 2006 through a donation from The CanWest Global Foundation. The Asper Fellowship in Media aims to enrich academic programs in media and journalism at Western, expand research on significant topics in Canadian media, and promote public discussion about Canadian media and the media industry within Canada, including the business of media.
